In a previous post, I share a sketch and background for my son’s cargo bike. Tom LaBonty (Tom’s Cargo Bikes) has taken on the build. He will build my teenage-son-to-be a cargo bike.
When he sent me these two photos, I was emotionally struck. You see, that little blue bike is Kael’s first two-wheeler. Seeing the little blue bike cut up, solidified what I already knew–my first born is growing up. He has not used that blue bike since he was 3 or 4.
Now it is real. I see the blue bike morph into something new and this is the metaphor for Kael who is also morphing into something new–a teenager.
The Cargo Flyer is Tom’s cargo bike build #67.
Kael does not know about this present so Shhhhhhhh. Kael’s friends, family, and in some cases, interested people who read the original post, will outfit the bike with all the baubles, bells, and what-nots. There is a super cool guy in Seattle, David, who sewed a messenger bag for Kael. Red and white. Just like the bike. The interest in this project is great.
March 22, 2013 is fast approaching. I came across a futon frame in a free pile. I will use the slats to create a pallet that is similar to the Radio Flyer wagon slats.
For more photos, I have a Cargo Flyer Flickr set.

I didn’t realize that part of his cargo bike is coming from his original two-wheeler. That makes a really cool present even cooler! Cannot wait to see it all done AND with the teen recipient.
I clearly didn’t read your first post closely enough b/c you did share that there!
