PedalPalooza (wittco posted on June 15th, 2013 )

During DRT last year, two of my sons, Kael and Soren, wanted to create PedalPalooza rides. It was too late for them to create one for PedalPalooza 2012, but they were both ready for 2013. Here are their rides.

Soren created a ride for families with kids under 10. We started at Arbor Lodge and decorated our bikes. Rode to Peninsula Park, riding over the cool Bryant Bridge. From Peninsula Park we rode to Woodlawn Park where we had popsicles and played in the water feature. Above is Asa, Soren’s youngest brother, with the Pedal to Parks word bubble.

Kael created a ride to celebrate handmade and custom cargo bikes. Kael recently received a Tom Labonty cargo bike for his 13th birthday. Kael’s ride started at the SE Lucky Lab and ended at the NE Lucky Lab. The premise…You cannot spell Labonty without LAB. Some highlights of the ride were a cruise down the Esplanade and through the “corkscrew” bridge over Going Street. Above is Kael starting the cargo bike slow race.

The Esplanade switchback and the corkscrews at the ends of the Going St overpass were definitely highlights for me. I didn’t think I could do them and have routed myself other ways. Thanks to Kael for showing me I could!
